What Art Therapy Is

Art therapy is a therapeutic application of emotions, Art therapy helps give the emotions a canvas to be expressed on. (A canvas is any medium that can be used to help express oneself in a positive way). By creating art and reflecting on its products and methods, individuals may better understand themselves and others. Art therapy encourages the use of all hemispheres of the brain. For example, nonverbal artistic expression is predominantly a right-brain function; writing is a left-brain language center function. Art therapy aids in resolving conflicts and issues within oneself and with others, developing interpersonal skills, the management of attitudes, the reduction of stress, and the enhancement of self-esteem and self-awareness.

Art therapy uses art, photographs, creative art processes, and client reactions to generate products to illuminate an individual’s growth, skills, personality, desires, concerns, and conflicts. Art therapy practice is founded on an understanding of human developmental and psychological theories that are applied across a broad spectrum of assessment and treatment models, including educational, psychodynamic, cognitive, transpersonal, and other therapeutic modalities for resolving emotional conflicts, fostering self-awareness, developing social skills, in managing behavior, solving problems, and reducing anxiety as well as processing.
